Brief Guide

  1. Meet the Basic Requirements

    • Both parties must be at least 18 years old.

    • If either party is 16 or 17, parental or legal guardian consent is required.

    • Marriage is not allowed for individuals under 16.

  2. Choose the Location for Your Marriage

    • Decide which municipality in New Jersey you want to get married in, as the process must begin at the local registrar's office of that municipality.

  3. Gather the Required Documents

    • Valid photo identification (driver’s license, passport, or state ID).

    • Proof of residence (e.g., utility bill or official mail).

    • Divorce or death certificate, if either party was previously married.

  4. Complete the Marriage License Application

    • Both parties must go together to the registrar’s office in the chosen municipality.

    • Bring one witness who is at least 18 years old.

    • Fill out and sign the marriage license application.

  5. Pay the License Fee

    • The fee for the marriage license is $28 (may vary by municipality).

  6. Wait the Mandatory Waiting Period

    • There is a 72-hour waiting period after submitting the application before the marriage license is issued.

    • The license is valid for 6 months (or less if a specific extension is requested).

  7. Plan the Ceremony

    • Coordinate the ceremony with an authorized officiant.

    • Ensure at least two witnesses are present during the ceremony.

  8. Register the Marriage

    • After the ceremony, the officiant must send the signed marriage certificate to the registrar’s office in the municipality where the marriage took place to officially register the marriage.

Premarital Counseling

Taking premarital counseling is a valuable step for couples preparing for marriage. Counseling helps couples learn how to express themselves effectively. This builds a strong foundation for resolving conflicts constructively.

It also provides an opportunity to discuss expectations about roles, responsibilities, finances, intimacy, and other aspects of married life. This helps prevent misunderstandings later.

Counseling can help identify and address potential red flags or recurring disagreements that may become more significant challenges later in marriage.  The process encourages couples to reflect on the seriousness of their commitment and strengthens their resolve to work through challenges together.

â€‹    Even if your relationship feels strong, premarital counseling is a proactive way to invest in your future together. It can help you and your partner create a shared vision for your marriage and equip you with tools to maintain a loving and lasting relationship.
